PRACTISE WITH PURPOSE
RE5 exam technique.
A method for reading the question you were asked, explaining your choice and turning practice mistakes into a useful next study step.
Read the task before choosing an option
Before judging the answers, identify the person, activity and decision in the question. Then identify the instruction: choose the correct statement, the exception, the best response or a particular sequence.
Use a short mental note such as person - action - rule - instruction. This is a reading aid, not a shortcut that replaces knowledge of the legislation.
When reviewing practice, distinguish I did not know the rule from I knew it but answered a different question. Those mistakes need different next steps.
Watch for NOT, EXCEPT, best and least
Mark the instruction in your mind before evaluating each option. If the question asks for the exception, a statement that is usually true might be a distractor rather than the answer.
Original study-method example
Which action is NOT a useful way to review a practice mistake?
- Identify the misunderstood concept.
- Check the explanation against the relevant source.
- Memorise the answer letter without understanding it.
- Try a fresh example of the same concept.
Answer: C. The task asks for the action that does not help understanding. The example demonstrates question reading; it is not an official RE5 question.
Separate the facts from the labels
Underline the fact that changes the answer. A role label such as administrator, adviser or consultant should not be your only clue. Ask what the person actually did and which source definition or requirement is being tested.
For a revision exercise, write a two-sentence fictional scenario. Change one fact and ask whether your conclusion changes. If you cannot explain why, revisit the underlying topic rather than completing more of the same questions.
Use the worked examples in advice and intermediary services to practise this distinction.
Evaluate combination options one statement at a time
For a Roman-numeral list, decide whether each individual statement fits before looking for the matching combination. Keep that judgement separate from the final answer letter.
Original study-method example
Which habits help you understand a practice mistake?
- Explain why the selected answer fits.
- Check the source behind the explanation.
- Assume the answer letter will stay the same in a different question.
If the options are A: i only; B: i and ii only; C: ii and iii only; D: all three, the answer is B. Evaluate the statements first, then match the combination. This is an original technique exercise, not regulatory content or an official exam item.
Use time checkpoints in mock practice
Choose checkpoints before you start a timed mock, then check whether you are spending too long on one item. For example, in a 120-minute, 50-question practice session, you could reserve 15 minutes for review. That leaves 105 minutes for the first pass, or about two minutes per question on average.
This is planning arithmetic for a practice session, not an official pacing rule. Some questions will need less time and others more. Follow the official examination body's instructions when writing the real exam.
During review, change an answer when you can identify a specific reason. Do not change it simply because you dislike seeing the same option letter several times.
Review the attempt, not only the percentage
- Wrong: identify the rule or reading mistake behind the answer.
- Correct but guessed: revisit it until you can explain the reasoning.
- Unanswered: distinguish lack of time from lack of understanding.
- Repeated paper: ask whether the improved score reflects understanding or remembering the questions.
Record one next action for each recurring gap. Use the mistake-review template, then revisit the topic before a fresh attempt.
